Western New York’s growing season is shorter than a lot of the country’s, and starting lawn care at the right time makes a real difference in how your grass looks by summer. Here’s a season-by-season breakdown.
Early Spring: Cleanup First
Once the snow is gone and the ground has firmed up, start with a cleanup: clearing fallen branches, matted leaves, and any debris winter left behind. Don’t mow or fertilize on wet or still-frozen ground, since it compacts the soil and can damage the grass underneath.
Mid-Spring: Mowing and First Fertilization
Once grass is actively growing and you’re mowing regularly, it’s time for the first fertilizer application. This is also the window for overseeding any thin or bare patches left over from winter.
Late Spring Into Summer: Maintain the Rhythm
Weekly mowing during peak growth keeps grass thick and better able to resist weeds. A second fertilizer application typically lands here, timed to support the lawn through summer heat.
Fall: The Most Important Season You’re Probably Skipping
Fall is arguably the best window for seeding in this climate: the soil is still warm, the air is cooler, and there’s less weed competition than in spring. It’s also when the final fertilizer applications happen, building root strength before winter.
Winter: Mostly Hands-Off, With One Exception
Once the lawn goes dormant, there’s not much to do beyond staying off it when it’s frozen or waterlogged. Dormant seeding in late fall or early winter is the one exception, where seed is laid down to germinate once spring conditions hit.
The Short Version
- Spring: cleanup, then mowing and first fertilization once growth starts
- Summer: consistent weekly mowing and a mid-season fertilizer application
- Fall: the best window for seeding, plus final fertilization
- Winter: mostly dormant, with dormant seeding as an option
